I prefer to use the english word "socializing". I think it is a good single world translation. But, I don't know any french word for that.
Anyway, it is a very popular word in swedish. You "socialize" with your neighbours, with your colleagues, with your parents ... And dogs owners also socialize, everyone socialize.
